JesmondLocal

I reported for hyperlocal news service, JesmondLocal from 2018/2019, writing news stories based in the Jesmond area of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

I worked with freelance journalist's Ian Wylie (fmr editor of the Guardian, Financial Times, Monocle, founder of Civic Journalism Lab) and Chris Stokel Walker (Guardian, Wired, BuzzFeed News, Economist, BBC, author of "YouTubers").

I produced the Live Broadcast of our local election coverage, which can be seen here.

I also was the social media reporter at the hustings event we organised in Jesmond, live-tweeting the debate.

International News Pop-Up

International News Pop-Up is a bi-annual event, where journalism students across the globe report on a specific topic for 24 hours, both live and pre-recorded.

Health and Wellbeing

  • Christmas Shoppers- I took to the streets of Newcastle to ask shoppers how the Christmas pressures affect their health.
  • Football Supporters- I visited St. James' Park, home of Newcastle United, on a matchday, to ask supporters how football affects their health and wellbeing.
International Women's Day
  • Perspectives on Womanhood (with Victoria Petrie) - I spoke to women of all ages to ask them what it means to be a woman.

"Hunger Doesn't Wear Club Colours"- Newcastle United Supporters Foodbank

As part of my master's degree, I reported on the fundraising efforts of the Newcastle United Supporters Foodbank, which raises money on matchday's for the U.K's largest foodbank- the West End Foodbank.

The website contains a variety of multimedia content, including interviews with organisers and those who benefitted from the foodbank, foodbank videos, photo galleries and written pieces.

It can be found here.

Final Portfolio

For my final Master's portfolio, I created six pieces of news content in four weeks: two online news stories, one feature, one social media video, one broadcast piece and one long-form interview (designed for broadcast).

They can be found here.

Newcastle Pretty Muddy

I created an online, multimedia news piece covering the Cancer Research Muddy Run, in Exhibition Park, Newcastle.

I followed one runner, Amy Wilson who ran in aid of her mum, Jane, who died of cancer in 2018.

It can be found here.

Broadcast

In a group of 4, we sourced and produced two broadcast news packages.

  • Gumball the Seal- We visited The Blue Reef Aquarium, to learn about the work they were doing to rehabilitate injured seals.
  • Buy the Kilo- We visited Tynemouth's first waste-free grocery shop, to see how they were combating the global plastic problem.
